Adaptogens 101

What are Adaptogens? They are natural medicines used in Aryuvedic practices. The purpose is to balance out the "hypothalamic-pituitary-endocrine axis". In simpler terms it helps balance the stress hormones and adrenals in your body. There are many different varieties of these natural supplements that target specific issues. They are easy to incorporate into smoothies, coffee, tea, or in supplement form. These are just a few of my favorites. This will be a quick run through and starter guide for anyone interested in using adaptogens.

Maca: a root that comes in different colors and taste. Red being the sweetest, yellow the least sweet, and black is in between. Best form- Maca root powder, can be added to smoothies or morning coffee.

Ashwagandha: Best known as "Indian Ginseng", this is the best for balancing cortisol. Also a natural root with a slightly astringent taste. A great thyroid supporter can really help balance your hormones. *note- if on thyroid medicine please consult a doctor.*The site has amazing quality and blends ashwagandha with protein powder as well! Reishi Mushroom:  Known as the "mushroom of immortality" in China. This mushroom carries many benefits including anti-aging and anti-cancer. My personal experience is one of my favorites. This intermixed with elderberry has kept me cold free this whole winter and helps with seasonal allergies. There are great blends by Four Sigmatic with coffee and cocoa.

Lemon Balm: My second favorite of these supplements. This herb is known to modulate neurotransmitters in the nervous system. Increases GABA in the brain, which improves mood and creates a calming effect. I prefer to take this at night it helps with relaxation and indigestion. I noticed even when I couldn't sleep it still helped me get through the day less stressed. One of the best ways to take is either pill form or tea. It has a pleasant taste close to a light black tea(great with honey).

  • improves memory and brain fog
  • anti-cancer
  • hyperthyroid support
Many of these herbs can be used interchangeably and provide natural support. Something to take away everyone is different and certain herbs may affect you in different ways. Unlike conventional medicines, natural remedies take time to reach the full benefits. It may take a couple weeks to feel a difference. If you take traditional medication consult with a physician or do your research on drug interactions.
